The 2003 Gambling Act prohibits remote interactive gambling in New Zealand. And the definition of remote interactive gambling is “gambling by a person at a distance by interaction through a communication device”.
The Gambling Act further states that “communication devices include such things as computers, telephones, radios and similar devices”. In other words, you aren’t allowed to gamble online on a New Zealand betting site.
But don’t be alarmed – the prohibition doesn’t apply to remote interactive gambling that’s conducted overseas. In other words, it’s not illegal for Kiwis’ to gamble online, as long as the website is based outside of the country.
